How to make chocolate!

Chocolate is a wonderful dessert that almost everyone loves.  Not only is it yummy, but has a long and varied history.  I wrote a paper on the history of chocolate in the style of Tribe Awesome, where we look at the big picture.  Unlike other histories of chocolate, mine starts from the big bang and continues its story into the future.  I hope you like it.  Yet, despite its history and deliciousness, people hardly ever make it themselves.  Here’s how you can be awesome and make your own chocolate.

  1. Buy (or harvest) cocoa beans.  We found these beans from Ecuador on amazon and you can receive them within 24 hours!
  2. Heat your oven to 400° and roast your beans for 10 minutes

  3. Turn your oven down to 200° and continue to cook them for 5 minutes
  4. Take the beans out of the oven and let them cool off a little bit
  5. Take the skin off of the bean

  6. Put the roasted beans into a coffee or spice grinder and grind until fine
  7. Add in sugar (we normally put in ~25g/100g)
  8. Mix together in grinder

  9. Transfer bean paste into mortar and pestle
  10. Grind until your arms are tired!

  11. “Temper” the chocolate by moving it around with spoons until it hardens a bit
